ROUND ELEVEN OF THE NRL PREMIERSHIP SEASON 2010
ROUND 11 BYES
FRIDAY
6-23Knights lost to Tigers
TIGERS 23: G Ellis, C Lawrence, B Marshall, G Daniela Tries; B Marshall 3/5 Goals + 1 Field Goal.
KNIGHTS 6: B Rogers Try; W Naiqama 1/1 Goal.
Post Game Tweet: #NRL FNF Recap: Torrential rain doesn't stop the Wests Tigers from grinding out 23-6 win over Newcastle at EnergyAustralia. Farah & Ellis outstanding.
NRL Rd 11 Notes: Tim Sheens told Peter Sterling the Tigers would win before the game... he is a Super Coach after all. | Newcastle started strongly but they were missing a lot of qualilty without Gidley, Mullen, De Gois and MacDougall. | Robbie Farah, Gareth Ellis, Chris Heighington and Benji Marshall stood out in the ordinary conditions. | Want a sign this is Farah's team? He over-ruled Marshall late in the match and kicked for touch to slow the game down and put it out of reach of the Knights. | Newcastle won't be there at the end of the season, the Tigers must find some passion in their defence if they plan on being there though. | For more each week follow the NRL Tweet on Twitter.
<> Market Watch: NEW $1.95 v WTG $1.87
> Tuesday Preview: MASSIVE game for the Wests Tigers who were beyond poor at the SCG v the Rabbitohs last Sunday. Newcastle won't have their best player in skipper Kurt Gidley who will captain NSW and key players Jarrod Mullen, Isaac De Gois & Zeb Taia due to injury. The Tigers on the other hand have their best players available in Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall & Lote Tuqiri and simply must win this game even on the road at EnergyAustralia Stadium. Tim Sheens will light every fire he knows under his players for this clash and I'm backing the experienced Tigers coach to get the best out of his players against an understrength Knights. Tigers by quite a few.
> Selection & Fantasy News May 19: As mentioned above Kurt Gidley won't play as he's skippering NSW in Origin 1 and there's no Mullen, De Gois or Taia for the Knights. Newcastle also lost Shannon McDonnell to a knee injury and Evarn Tuimavave to a snapped achilles tendon. The Tigers won't have Liam Fulton or Blake Ayshford who both were injured against South Sydney but promote impressive English recruit Mark Flanagan to the backrow and give the speedy Geoff Daniela a chance in the centres for Ayshford. Youngster Simon Dwyer also joins the bench with possible debutant Josh Davis for the Tigers. (Update May 21) Junior Sa'u & Dan Tolar are in some doubt after barely training this week but are still expected to play. There were rumours surrounding the status of Benji Marshall for this game... if he doesn't play there's some truth to a rumour he's unhappy with 'something' but if he plays - the rumour is utter dribble... plus it came from a far from reputable Dragons fan so make your own mind up. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
> NRL Tweet's Prediction: Tigers by 10 = CORRECT
SATURDAY
18-22Eels lost to Sharks
SHARKS 22: A Tupou, D Collis, T Smith, P Aiton Tries; N Gardner 3/3, T Smith 0/1 Goals.
EELS 18: T Humble, J Robson, D Mortimer Tries; L Burt 3/3 Goals.
Post Game Tweets: #NRL Sat Recap: Do the Sharkies have life in 2010? Cronulla only take lead in 66th minute but probably deserved their surprise 22-18 win at Parramatta.
NRL Rd 11 Notes Added After the Game.

<> Market Watch: PAR $1.30 v CRO $3.50
> Tuesday Preview: Parramatta have lost Jarryd Hayne & Timana Tahu to NSW but get Eric Grothe back from injury - so they are in good shape for the Origin period. The Sharks didn't have a player picked in either Origin side initially but Trent Barrett has been called up as the standby five-eighth for NSW should Tahu not be fit. It is a disruption the Sharks don't need and coach Ricky Stuart probably expected to lose Paul Gallen instead of his skipper. Cronulla blooded another rookie at fullback with Nathan Gardner not looking out of place in the top grade but the Sharks attack looks promising for the opening few sets and then uninspiring for the rest of the match. Cronulla's strength is their backrow yet they rely on them far too much in attack when they really don't offer a great deal of variety on the edges... Parramatta played superbly v Manly at Brookvale and even without Hayne & Tahu - their second phase play will be too much for the Sharks to beat. Eels in a close one at Parramatta Stadium.
> Selection & Fantasy News May 19: With Hayne & Tahu out for the Eels they put rookie Tom Humble (who impressed on debut v Manly at five-eighth) at fullback, get Kris Keating back at five-eighth after he missed the Manly game and Krisnan Inu moves to the centres with Grothe coming onto the wing. Outside back Jonathon Wright is on the bench as cover for Grothe. Cronulla named the same 17 that was beaten 34-14 by Penrith but if Barrett stays in camp with NSW then look for either early season discard Scott Porter to get the call up or John Morris will shift to five-eighth from hooker allowing Paul Aiton to start. (Update May 21) The big rumour doing the rounds this morning isn't player related but the status of current Cronulla Coach Ricky Stuart. Mail this morning has him no longer at Cronulla past this weekend with Nathan Brown tipped to come in and take over next season. We'll believe it when we see it but the NRL Tweet did break the news that Luke Covell is retiring at the end of 2010 and moving to Queensland - which suggests that he's been told by any incoming coaching staff that he's not required beyond this season. As for player news - Kris Keating should play while Trent Barrett's status for the game is still uncertain with Timana Tahu's ankle injury yet to be cleared for State of Origin One. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
> NRL Tweet's Prediction: Eels by 4 = INCORRECT
SUNDAY
14-22Dragons lost to Raiders
RAIDERS 22: G Buttriss, J Thompson, J Croker, J Dugan Tries; T Campese 3/4 Goals.
DRAGONS 14: J Nightingale, K Stanley, T Merrin Tries; J Soward 1/3 Goals.
Post Game Tweets: #NRL Sun Recap: Canberra explode for 3 tries in 6 minutes in 2nd half to set up 22-14 win over St.George-Illawarra at WIN Stadium. Terry Campese, Joel Thompson & Josh Dugan the stars.
NRL Rd 11 Notes Added After the Game.

<> Market Watch: STI $1.75 v CAN $2.08
> Tuesday Preview: Canberra should enter this game with some confidence despite playing some ordinary football against the Storm at home last Saturday Night. The reason is they've got a good recent record against the Dragons and St.George-Illawarra won't have Ben Creagh, Neville Costigan, Michael Weyman, Brett Morris, Matt Cooper or Darius Boyd who are playing Origin. That means a host of fill-ins for the Dragons - although getting Beau Scott back from injury is a bonus. Canberra need to open up their game plan for a start but their big man centric plan might work against the Dragons at WIN if errors don't dominate. St.George-Illawarra still have Jamie Soward, Ben Hornby & Luke Priddis so their structure in the basics will remain but they've lost their entire left side attack... and that's their go-to strength in attack. Big game for Dan Hunt who has played well enough this season to enter into NSW calculations if injury hits any of the Game One starters. Canberra on the road in a nail biter.
> Selection & Fantasy News May 19: St.George-Illawarra lose their six man Origin contingent and replace them with Scott, Kyle Stanley, Michael Lett, Nick Emmett, Ricky Thorby & Trent Merrin in the run on team. Forwards Jarrod Saffy & Jake Marketo join the bench. Canberra got Joel Monaghan back from a busted thumb last week but lost Tom Learoyd-Lahrs & David Shillington to Origin - Joe Picker will start, while Brett Kelly, Danny Galea & Sam Mataora join the bench. Travis Waddell is also out for the Raiders, while there's still no sign of Alan Tongue. David Furner has incidated that although he wasn't named, Shaun Fensom a big chance of starting at lock with Trevor Thurling moving to the prop rotation. (Update May 21) Breaking news - Canberra fullback Josh Dugan is in doubt with a back injury. Even though he wasn't listed to play this week - Canberra skipper Alan Tongue is booked in for groin surgery that will rule him out of action until the final month of the 2010 regular season. Still waiting to hear confirmation on whether or not Shaun Fensom will lineup for Canberra - he would take the place of Brett Kelly or Sam Mataora. St.George-Illawarra's five-eighth Jamie Soward is battling the flu but should play. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
> NRL Tweet's Prediction: Raiders by 2 = CORRECT
26-24Warriors defeated Rabbitohs
WARRIORS 26: J Ropati 2, L Hohaia, B Tate, R Packer Tries; B Seymour 3/5 Goals.
RABBITOHS 24: F Talanoa 2, C Best, R Wesser Tries; I Luke 4/4 Goals.
Post Game Tweets: #NRL Sun Recap: Warriors get vital win at home by holding on to defeat South Sydney 26-24. Win soured by potential season ending injury to Sam Rapira. .

<> Market Watch: WAR $1.80 v SOU $2.00
> Tuesday Preview: The return of Brett Seymour made a big difference to the Warriors game plan and freed up James Maloney to play wider where he thrives. Manu Vatuvei is out again after having a barry crocker of a return last week but the Warriors get skipper Simon Mannering back (we think). The Rabbitohs will be full of confidence after dusting the Wests Tigers 50-10 at the SCG on a day when everything went right but they'll have to win in Auckland without key forwards Roy Asotasi (injured) and Dave Taylor (QLD). If this was in Sydney the Rabbitohs would have my pick but we're in Auckland so the Warriors get the cash at home.
> Selection & Fantasy News May 19: Michael Crocker is named (with some certainty) for his first game of 2010 but as mentioned above the Bunnies won't have Asotasi or Taylor. The Warriors lost Vatuvei but replaced him with rookie Bill Tupou and Mannering joins the pack. Luke Capewell would drop off an extended bench for Souths if Crocker is fit, while rookie prop Mataupu Poching could find himself squeezed out if Mannering does play. (Update May 21) Roy Asotasi is a chance of playing this weekend and will make the trip to Auckland - he'll be a game time decision with a shoulder injury. Michael Crocker should play but again might be a late scratching. The Warriors expect all their starters to play and will shave one of their forwards from the bench come kick-off. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
> NRL Tweet's Prediction:  Warriors by 10 = CORRECT
MONDAY
31-16Panthers defeated Bulldogs
PANTHERS 31: M Gordon 3, T Grant, S Elford Tries; M Gordon 5/5 Goals, L Walsh 1 Field Goal.
BULLDOGS 16: S Turner, A Ryan, S Neumann Tries; B Goodwin 2/3 Goals.
Post Game Tweets: #NRL MNF Recap: Penrith's dominance in the play the ball is the foundation for 31-16 win over Canterbury at CUA Stadium. Michael Gordon & Tim Grant sensational.
NRL Rd 11 Notes Added After the Game.

<> Market Watch: PEN $1.38 v CBY $3.05.
> Tuesday Preview: One tough game to pick. On form you have to take the home side Penrith but the Bulldogs played well in their loss to the Dragons... and then there's the Origin factor. Penrith have lost Petero Civoniceva, Luke Lewis & Trent Waterhouse, while Canterbury wave goodbye to Michael Ennis, Brett Kimmorley & Jamal Idris. If you weighed up the value lost - you'd come out fairly even, so this game comes down to the class left on both teams. That sees the advantage go to Canterbury who still have Josh Morris, Luke Patten and Ben Barba (who is finally starting at halfback) vs Michael Jennings, Lachlan Coote & Frank Pritchard (returning from injury). Halfback Luke Walsh's kicking game could decide this but even with this being at CUA Stadium - Canterbury's pack looks strong with David Stagg, Andrew Ryan & maybe Ben Hannant playing, Barba will get plenty of ball and feed the likes of Patten, Morris & Goodwin all night and I'm taking the Bulldogs by a dozen.
> Selection & Fantasy News May 19: Ben Hannant is a chance of making a comeback from a knee injury given the game is on a Monday but the Bulldogs have still got a number of big outs with Ennis, Kimmorley & Idris playing for NSW. Dene Halatau goes to hooker, Shane Neumann covers centre and Ben Barba is at halfback. Rookie Jake Foster comes onto the bench alongside former Panther Joel Romelo. Penrith promote Matt Bell, Nathan Smith and get Pritchard back to replace their Origin players. Joseph Paulo, Frank Puletua & Wade Graham join the bench. (Update May 21) Hannant still remains an outside chance... but may be another week away from returning. There may be some changes on the Bulldogs bench but the Panthers are expected to take Wade Graham into the match as an extra ball-player with Luke Lewis out through Origin selection - so Frank Puletua or Joseph Paulo will drop off the bench. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
> NRL Tweet's Prediction: Bulldogs by 12 = INCORRECT

Round 11 NRL Preview:
> Selection & Fantasy News (Update May 19):
NSW: K Gidley (c), B Morris, M Cooper, T Tahu, J Hayne, J Lyon, B Kimmorley, M Weyman, M Ennis, J Perry, T Waterhouse, B Creagh, A Watmough. Bench: J Idris, T Learoyd-Lahrs, L Lewis, B White. Emergencies: B Finch.
QLD: B Slater, D Boyd, G Inglis, W Tonga, I Folau, D Lockyer (c), J Thurston, M Scott, M Ballin, P Civoniceva, N Myles, S Thaiday, A Harrison. Bench: C Cronk, D Shillington, D Taylor, N Costigan. Emergencies: B Te'o.
(Update May 21) - At this stage it seems Timana Tahu will play if he gets through Friday's training session - this would see Trent Barrett go back to play for Cronulla v Parramatta on Saturday. It looks like Cameron Smith is still 50/50 at best but Neville Costigan should be ok after a hamstring strain v Canterbury had him in some doubt.
(Update May 22) Queensland have LOST Cameron Smith who failed to recover from an elbow injury suffered in the ANZAC Test and he has been replaced by Matt Ballin at hooker for the Maroons. No developments for NSW.
(Update May 24) Jason King has joined the NSW Squad as cover for any late minute injuries to the forwards. Brett Finch & Ben Te'o remain the official 18th men. (With help from the SMH's Late Mail).
